coder wiped out my comments.php replaced with junk

I had a local coder who claimed he was fluent in wordpress- wanted to add html to grab avatars- he ended screwing up the html codex and replaced with non functioning html (you cannot reply to a comment and when you go to a page the colors on the sidebars disappear) I would greatly appreciate any help- this is a sports blog and time is of the essence
