Code tags not working – code doesnt display

I’m trying to paste code (php, javascript, whatever) samples in my blog posts for people to see the actual code, but the < code> tags do nothing and when I use blockquote – the code doesnt display properly either….
any ideas how to get the code tags to display either plain text or highlighted php code like IPB or phpBB does with the code tags?….
