    Hello there,

We just downloaded your plugin, and converted all our images to WebP. We have enabled the WebP conversion, JS WebP Rewriting and Picture WebP Rewriting rules in the settings.

I’ve cached the Cloudflare cache, and tried to load the site and inspect how the images load via the inspect tool in Chrome. First I received an “EXPIRED” in the cf-cache-status, and after refreshing the site I received a “HIT”. I also did a GT-Metrix waterfall analysis on the front page, and there it gets all “HIT” on images. However, upon browsing around the website, some images receives a “MISS” even after refreshing the page.

Do you have any idea of this inconsistent behaviour? I suspect it has something do something with the headers, but I am not sure.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Victor

Are you asking why you are receiving a cached hit on some images and a miss on others? Generally, that has to do with whether or not the CDN node that you are loading from is warmed up. However, as you are using Cloudflare’s CDN, it wouldn’t have anything to do with our plugin. I would recommend reaching out to them to discuss it. Or, perhaps just try loading the site a few more times, as that’s usually the best way to warm up a CDN cache.

    Thanks for your reply.

I wasn’t aware of the fact that a CDN has to warm up.
Anyway, I contacted Cloudflare regarding this issue, and they believe it could be because the JS WebP Rewriting and Picture WebP Rewriting rules are both enabled. They mentioned, that the JS WebP Rewriting mostly applies to older IOS devices, and that the rule would add a small base64 image and a not so small JS code to every HTML page of my website, even pages without any pictures on them. They advise us to reconsider the use of the JS WebP Rewriting rule.

Does your plugin work well with Cloudflare if both rules are disabled, and are we still able to cache WebP images via Cloudflare? What is your advice here?

The CDN caching wouldn’t have anything to do with JS WebP.

If you use Cloudflare, the only way to deliver WebP is either by using their Polish feature or by using our JS WebP. You don’t have to use the Picture WebP option or you can just use the Picture WebP option (which would remove the JS aspect and instead wrap your images in <picture> HTML).
