close discussion but keep comments visible

  • I have some comments on my post but now I want to close the discussion, but still have the existing comments visible. But whenever I close the post for comments, they all disappear. The only way to keep them available is by setting ‘Users must be registered and logged in to comment’, but then WP shows a link to the login screen, which I don’t want.

    I tried all settings but it doesn’t seem possible to keep comments visible while disabling new comments. Is this possible and if so, what am I missing here?

  • It is possible, but it’s in the theme. Themes are supposed to show the comments even if closed, but some themes do it wrong.
    You can check this by going into the Customizer and previewing another theme. (You don’t have to save the change, just preview; click to the page with comments and see how that theme shows it.)
