cloning vs. staging ?

    Is there a difference between the two in terms of pre-setting? I’m asking because I’m getting different results (whether I clone/stage manually or with a plugin). On one type I can get CSS issues, on another I get database issues…. there’s never a straight copy of the live site. So, is there some particular tweaking for creating a stage site?

    They are two terms for the same thing. Normally you would ‘clone’ a site to a ‘staging’ environment where you can test and develop it without affecting the ‘real’ (production) site.

    When you take about the ‘two options’, what do you mean? WordPress doesn’t natively have a function to clone or stage the site. This feature is normally added by a plugin or hosting provider.

    correct, I have been trying with both my hosting options and manual options. Also, dedicated plugins do make a distinction between cloning/staging (mostly separating free/premium). I can’t explain why I’m never getting the right results. For instance, an image doesn’t load but if I open its link it shows… so it’s not a css/url issue, it’s something else, but what…

    Its true.
    You have to make use of a 3rd party or plugin-type fuctionality,
    in order to enjoy thw benefit. (Backups etc same)
    Also pertaining to the question posed:
    An admin software such as softaculous, contain fuctionality to
    clone and/or staging your site.
    My interpretation is:
    Cloning:
    Creates another instance of your site completely.
    No link there to live site… no pushing of changes from “previewed/testing/staging” as in Staging site.
    Staging:
    Mirrors an indipendant copy of your site, until you “push” (To your live (Production site) or void (No changes made to live site), the aspects you tested and then want to
    impliment.
    Feedback/Confirmation would be appreciated.

    yes I confirm that cloning is not a real clone of the production site. Only staging allows to have the same behaviours of that. But Softacolous “push” feature is relatively new and fails most of the time, therefore you cannot trust it. Better to do your tests in the staging site and then manually do the same on the production site. ?? Cloning a site is completely useless.

    Cloning sites can be useful for moving to other hosting providers. Just thought I would put that out there. ??

    sure @tneville but I noticed that a cloned site is not the same as a staging one (it misses data) so I take that one will just carry the gaps along with the migration
