I think I’ve found a bug. I (administrator, and super admin) created a new role called “Site Owner” by cloning the Administrator role then changing ONLY the following permissions to “deny”: Delete themes, Edit themes, Update themes, and all plugins permissions.

Now I’m unable to make any user with the “Site owner” role the author of a post (a standard blog post, not a custom post type).

Is there any way to work around this bug?

    Hi @deralict

I followed the same steps with cloning Administrator role and changing listed permissions. I could change the author of the regular post in Quick Edit post mode. You could try to change the Position of Site Owner role to 90, but it should also work with default 0 position.

I just tried changing the author in quick edit post mode and that worked! Still can’t change it in the normal edit post screen though.

Also, I’ve never heard of a “position” and don’t know how to change that.

For some reason the Author dropdown in post displays only users with default roles like Administrator, Editor, and Author. You will need to use Author dropdown in quick edit post to select user with custom role.

Members has Role Positions meta box in the Edit Role screen that allows you to control capabilities for roles with lower position/hierarchy. However, it does not affect Author dropdown so you can ignore it.
