• Hi,

I have a client who wants to be able to make updates to his WP site on a localhost environment offline, then synch to his live db when he’s back online. He’d like to be able to do this regularly. He’s the only one who will be maintaining his site.

I’ve installed a virtual server for him and have shown him how to use his site locally, but I’m not sure how to allow him to synch up his db when he’s online. I guess I can write a plugin that allows him to click a button from his wp_admin when online to push his wp_posts table.

Is this a Very Bad Idea? Any alternative I can propose to him, other than reverting to a static html site? Thoughts?

  • It’s definitely got an element of danger but the whole WordPress import and Export tools show it can be done (if sometimes imperfectly). Has the client thought about using the post by email feature of WordPress? That may handle this type of offline-to-online workflow better than trying to sync databases or trying to import XML.
