Click image, insert to writing area. How is this done?

I’m creating a plugin that inserts images (found on a site) into your post. The plugin operates directly below the writing area.

I’d like to know if wordpress had a standard command to *on click* insert data (in this instance, an image or image code) into the text area.

I could write the jquery code myself, but I want to make sure there is not a standard function available for this.

I don’t need a written tutorial for a reply, but a simple link or explanation could send me off in the right direction
