Cleverwise quotes displaying 3 error messages on homepage instead of quote

  • Hi there,

    I’ve been using this plugin on my site for a couple of years now, with no problems until today. I think it makes a great feature.

    this morning, instead of today’s quote, my homepage has this:

    Please could you help me resolve it? WordPress, theme (customizr) and plugins all up to date.

    Well that isn’t wanted!

    Your install is acting like it can’t get the layout and category. For the layout let’s try resaving the general layout data.

    1) Go into the Admin panel in WordPress.
    2) Visit the Daily Quotes plugin management screen.
    3) Click on “Settings” and Save.

    What happens?

    thank you for the swift reply. I thought replying to your email directly would get to you, but obviously it didn’t!

    The quote now appears (with slightly odd formatting) but still with error messages:

    I think I’ll remove the shortcode for the moment as it doesn’t look good to have error messages on the homepage but I would like to reinstate it if this problem can be solved.

    As you found out emailing doesn’t work.

    Those are really odd errors as your setup is acting like it can’t find key information. I would setup a new daily quote area and transfer the information from the non working as a test.

    You should have a section type, section layout, etc.

    I agree getting the errors off your main page. I would suggest just putting on a test page.

    you mean, delete the current set up (keeping the quotes, obviously!) and starting again?

    Looking at the 1st screen of daily quotes, it says:

    Daily Quote Sections: 0

    I can’t actually see where my quotes are. There is no “edit quote” option which I remember from before. Could they just have disappeared? How?

    OK. Just created a test page and a new quotes section. I went back into “edit quotes” to check the shortcode for putting it on the home page, when I noticed that the “I don’t have 366 days” box wasn’t checked, which I need it to be. I checked it, then clicked on save. Then this came up:

    Well that would explain the errors. That makes no sense unless something happened on your database server.

    However, as stated, that is the problem as the plugin can’t find any data. I would run an integrity check on the database. You are now getting into more database level issues.

    On MySQL you may run the check table command.

    However to recap I was suggesting starting a new daily quote section (while leaving the current on in place).

    I have tried to do that. When I checked that “I don’t have 366 days” box and saved, I got a long scrawl of error messages of the form

    I have no idea what this means but assume it links to your suggestion of doing an integrity check on the database. Do I do that in wp-admin or in the host control panel? Apologies for these really basic questions – I’m a hobbyist, so not technically expert.

    It sounds like the database corrupted that table which can happen and isn’t uncommon.

    Well the best place is your web hosting control panel. In most panels (like cPanel) there is an option called PHPMyAdmin which will allow you to run a check on that table.

    It is fairly straight forward. You could also just run a repair. Still if the database is MyISAM you have almost no chance of recovering your data without a backup. If it is InnoDB it may be recoverable as InnoDB keeps multiple copies of the data.

    I’ve not used that before and am not even sure where to find it. There’s a section called MySQL databases, which has a phpMyAdmin tab, but that requires a separate database name and password, which I don’t now how to set up. I guess I’ll have to get in touch with the hosting provider to ask. I’ve no idea if the database is MylSAM or InnoDB (or even what they are!).

    The site is backed up every day – would it be easier to restore a backup or would that casue other problems?

    Hi Jeremy – me again. I’ve gone into phpMyAdmin.

    first off, I get 2 lsightly worrying messages once I’m inside, which I’e asked my hosting provider for help with. Thet are:

    A newer version of phpMyAdmin is available and you should consider upgrading. The newest version is 4.8.1, released on 2018-05-25.

    our PHP MySQL library version 5.0.77 differs from your MySQL server version 5.6.21. This may cause unpredictable behavior.

    Then when I go into the databases, there are 2 points of interest. All of them are InnoDB apart from Daily Quotes, which is MylSAM. Might this be the problem?

    The second is that there doesn’t seem to be an integrity check option. The ones I’m offered are browse, structure, search, insert, empty and drop.

    I’d be grateful for expert advice on what to do next – many thanks.

    While ideally phpMyAdmin should be upgraded I have rarely seen it cause issues with data. So in general you should be safe there, however it is best to upgrade for security patches.

    Daily Quotes used to create MyISAM due to an oversight. However the plugin was altered to create InnoDB. I would just suggest reinstalling the plugin.

    However it is best to clean out the old database data first.

    Step 1:

    Deactivate Cleverwise Daily Quotes

    Step 2: In phpMyAdmin run the follow SQL statements:

    drop table wjz8_daily_quotes;

    delete from where wjz8_options where option_name='daily_quotes';

    delete from where wjz8_options where option_name='daily_quotes_version';

    Step 3:

    Renable the Cleverwise Daily Quotes plugin and it will recreate the table using InnoDB along with setup the plugin again.

    Hi Jeremy,

    Well, I tried to do as you said. I went into SQL and typed the text above as you’d written it, but when I clicked on “Go”, I got an error message – token mismatch. Which I assume means I’ve typed it wrong somewhere but it doesn’t indicate where, as far as I can see. I’ve tried putting in a line break before option_name and omitting the semicolons – neither makes a difference.

    I tried saving a screenshot of it, but Word won’t save it, and I can’t paste it into here.

    Please can you tell me what I’m doing wrong? Should I completely uninstall the plugin and reinstall it?

    I’m feeling completely out of my depth on this!
