Clearing element

I am using a shortcode to display 12 sponsors on a page – 4 rows of 3. Is there a way to clear each row by adding something to the shortcode? When I have handcoded something similar in WP, I would add a counter so that after every 3 items the row would clear/add a clearing element. Wondering if there is a simple solution using the shortcode?
