Clean Install – Categories lost

  • I recently did a clean install of WP 2.5.1 and I thought everything went well…. however…

    When I create a new category it appears to work fine… then when I create a new post and tick one of the new categories it also seems to work fine.

    However, when I go to MANAGE CATEGORIES I see those new categories with a POSTS count of 0. Yet THERE IS at least one post in each of the new categories.

    Has anyone experienced this problem? Anyone have a solution?

    A friend advised me to do a NEW clean install.. but I hesitate doing that as I have already done a lot of customization on my theme.

    What happens if you deactivate all plugins?

    Now some STRONG words about your statement “A friend advised me to do a NEW clean install.. but I hesitate doing that as I have already done a lot of customization on my theme.”

    IF YOU DO BACKUPS THIS IS A NON-ISSUE!!!!

    Yes, I have deactivated all my plugins and widgets… and no difference. Still not seeing the posts (which HAVE been published.

    As to backup and re-installs.. I’ll give it a try as that appears to be the next logical step.

    I had gone from wp 2.5 back to 2.0.x and lost my categories on one of my small blogs. I then went to 2.5.1. My reasons for going back to an earlier version have nothing to do with this problem.

    I found that the posts and pages were all under the default category, and nothing listed under the other categories.

    I decided to go to each post and resave it. That got some of the posts back under the correct category.

    If a post was under a sub-category likes this:

    top category, sub-category, then a sub-category under that one.

    I found that the link to the upper two was gone.

    I edited each post and click the link to the other 2 categories and everything was fine after that.

    I’ll mention I had a disconnect with my internet service provider during the upgrade while I was uploading my backup.

    As MichaelH points out elsewhere, the info is in the Mysql database.

    OK, I’ve taken Michael’s (above) advice and suggestion and backed up my server side database using php admin.

    Rather than try to reinstall everything myself I have gone to the install4free.wordpress.net and asked for help.

    In addition to solving the problems noted in the above comments, I also hope that Install4Free can put my WP 2.5.1 into the root versus the /wordpress/ directory.
