Clarification on Plugins

Just a question concerning the update from 2.2.1 to 2.5. The docs state that I should disable the plugins and that I can re-enable them after the install and then it states to delete all my old wp files. How do you enable something you’ve just deleted? Surely I’m not expected to re-install all the plugins…am I? If so, why can’t I just leave the plugin folder intact? Will this corrupt the upate? Based on all the posts in this forum concerning issues with upgrading to 2.5 I am trying to make the upgrade as smooth as possible.
