• Hello,

I am writing to this forum because I need some advice. I am trying to build a site for BMW enthusiasts. I have hired a design team and specified that I want to use Word Press as my platform. I have my own Centos LAMP server.

Basically, in mid production, the design team switched from Word Press to a custom CMS system that they designed themselves (or branded as their own). I only discovered this when I selected various plugins from the WP plugin area to be told that they couldn’t use them as the plugins won’t work with their CMS.

When I asked why they aren’t using WP as I specified, they replied that what I want in the site – WP can’t handle. The only thing in my site that is out of the ordinary are three PHP based calculators relating to various aspects of cars: tire size, engine displacement etc. . .

I think these guys are intentionally trying to lock me into using their CMS so that I am forever reliant on their team for support.

Could anyone help me out with an opinion?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • Whether or not the PHP calculators will work with WP seems like a secondary issue at the moment. The very fact that they switched platforms WITHOUT consulting you seems like a deal-breaker to me. Do you have any kind of a contract with them? Is WP specified anywhere? Or some evidence that showed agreement that WP would be used?

And yes, I’d say it does sound like they have an incentive to use their CMS…

Check out above and hit them with it ,Have to agree with WPyogi’s sentiments

Yes my contract is clear on my requirement to use WordPress. I am using VWorker.com and my contractor has both high ratings and a high number of feedbacks.

However, I believe his claims are bogus.

In my mind there’s absolutely nothing that would or should prevent them from using WordPress.

They couldn’t even install a pagination plugin for me!

    Drop them!!

I think these guys are intentionally trying to lock me into using their CMS so that I am forever reliant on their team for support.

haha, yeah, of course they are!! +1 for what Wpyogi said.

They couldn’t even install a pagination plugin for me!

It’s easy for people to be unethical when they assume their client doesn’t know much about technology.

    As for the functions

The only thing in my site that is out of the ordinary are three PHP based calculators relating to various aspects of cars: tire size, engine displacement etc. . .

You can probably do that one part a ton cheaper if you hire someone who specifically makes plugins, and then have the new people (who know wordpress) make your site and use that plugin on a sidebar or grab it with a [whateverthisiscalled].

But on their defense, there is a generation of people who are not updated on this stuff and don’t realize what could be done quicker, and more efficiently (in terms of making the website) on wordpress. Or Perhaps they are just that older generation of not updated people who made a CMS a while back and, because of all the time and effort they put into it , find it too painful to learn how capable wordpress is.

excuse my grammer…*Or Perhaps they are just that older generation of not updated people **and they also made a CMS a while back and, because of all the time and effort they put into it , find it too painful to learn how capable wordpress is.

Well, I have communicated my expectations to them and I think it’s not going to work out for either of us.

My next problem is this: how do I find a WP site designer that I can trust?

    Thanks,

    M

You could post a listing here https://jobs.wordpress.net/ . Of course, that’s no absolute guarantee of anything, but maybe a starting place. Some of the regular posters on these forums also do free-lance work — you can generally find their websites by clicking on their names. Again, no guarantee, but if you read through a bunch of postings you’ll quickly see who seems to know what they are talking about, etc.

Beyond that, ask for references and to see sites they’ve done…

Click on the link below and post your job there.
