Good morning Chuck how are you?

OK, my question I guess would be considered a general question but you would be the man that can answer this for me without having to dig through the web.

Firstly, I am a social media lamo and I really no nothing or (very little) about Facebook or any of the other social media platforms so please excuse my ignorance when I ask this question.

As stated, I have not been a big fan of social media and facebook despite being a coder and SEO so… I know that more now than ever, my perception on these mediums needs to change due to the way that the SEARCH landscape has changed.

My question to you Chuck is.. when I create a Facebook Profile and then create a Business Page in facebook for my business does the OPEN GRAPH require the Users Profile ID or the Business Page ID??

once again, sorry if I am lame on the question but I am trying my best to ask this properly but it’s not that easy when you don’t use faebook really.

Yes I am interested in using your plugin and I also develop with THESIS which I happened to see you make mention of in the BETA 2.1 section

    Thank you Chuck

Open graph doesn’t technically require either of those but they did away with pageID’s a while back. All you have the ability to add now is either a personal ID (or multiple) or the AppID.

2.1 should be fine for Thesis but if you can let me know if you do find any issues that’d be super mega awesome. I’ve been in the beginning of launching another startup while keeping our consulting company running and I haven’t had time for shit and testing on 2.1 hasn’t happened as much as I feel comfortable with to release it yet.
I know it’s pretty good on Genesis and few vanilla-type installs I have on testing environments but it needs some testing love.

And don’t worry – ask away – I really don’t mind.. I just suck at having time to answer stuff sometimes.. but i’ll eventually get to it ??

    Cheers

Hey thanks for the reply back Chuck. Much appreciated! Yeah, I know the feeling man, these past 2 months have been neck deep in a site migration and a company re-branding (my own) and this is just one more thing that I really don’t want to do is the whole social media thing but, once again, it’s being shoved down all of our throats by the establishment whether we like the shit or not.

None of the social media stuff has ever appealed to me in the least bit and although I know how good it is for business I was too busy running a business or with study to want to even consider giving a crap about it which I don’t but alas…. that time has passed and it’s time to suck it up and get on the bandwagon so to speak to appease the 3rd Reich and fuhrer GOOGLE.

Sure, I can see what I can do for you with Thesis but, I have to ask this… I know it’s “BETA” but how stable is this beta?

As with all developmental software in “Beta” we all know that we should not run it on a production website but there have been many instances with certain developers that their actual beta code is more well written than alleged “Stable” Public Paid Software.

People have nothing but good things to say about your work Chuck from what I can see and read so, with that said.. my time is very limited so I would need to use this on my actual business website do those time constraints. Where is 2.1 in terms of safely using it on a operational site please Chuck?

well there’s nothing it can hurt… the plugin only reads stuff. So aside from it throwing a 500 type error on your site (which you’d know right away) there’s really nothing that can break.
I’m running it on a couple of my live company sites so lol.

Just when you install it over the other one just make sure to clear any cache(s) you may have, both browser and plugin related and view-source and make sure it’s pulling the right title and description and images.
Otherwise you should be good. Worst case… re-upload 2.0.7 ??

    Thread Starter Campbell McArthur

    (@marshall-s-thompson)

Good enough and that works for me bro! I assume that I can do a fresh install with 2.1 without having ever used 2.0.7 before ?

    Plugin Author Chuck Reynolds

    (@ryno267)

yeah you just have to upload it from the files you get at github as it’s not in the plugin repo

    Thread Starter Campbell McArthur

    (@marshall-s-thompson)

You are referring to just the PHP file correct?

    Plugin Author Chuck Reynolds

    (@ryno267)

So.. the ideal situation for you to do is… download the current 2.0.7 from the repo. then get the php file and readme.txt and the /language directory and upload those over the ones in the ogp plugin dir in your ftp.
when i do ever push the final version of that beta up to the repo I’ll propably make it a higher version so everybody on the beta will also get the update notice.

    (@marshall-s-thompson)

Odd, I checked the OGP files in the Plugin directory where I had uploaded 2.0.7 earlier on my Mirror Test site (Mind you I had not entered the FB Data in the plugin fields yet!) and when I looked before uploading the PHP file that I had created from your code I had only seen the “2” existing files in the OGP 2.0.7 folder which were..

    Read Me
    wp-facebook-ogp.php

Am I missing something here Chuck or is this because I had not initiated the data in the plugin fields? Don’t think so but throwing it out there anyway

Your going to have to excuse my lack of knowledge on dealing with and using GitHub – I know exactly what it is and have used it in a very limited capacity just grabbing code in the past so…. I’m kind of green on the github scenario

    Posted another comment above Chuck

    (@ryno267)

well using a beta requires a little extra knowledge at times but… if you go to https://github.com/chuckreynolds/WPFBOGP on the right you’ll see a “Download Zip”…

Now you’re getting extra stuff in there because it’s a testing version but… until the new version comes out.. if you want to beta test.. that’s how you’d get the file.

I’m going to be offline until TUE for a work trip. Good luck man – if all else fails delete the plugin and redownload it from the WP plugin repo in your admin panel.

    Cheers

    Hey good morning Chuck,

Sure, I am aware of all of that but I am still trying to figure out what you meant by replacing the language files???

The stable version that I have installed on had the PHP Plug file and a read me file. I got the stable version setup and as I had thought, it cant call on a language file that is not present in 2.0.7 so don’t mind me being a little confused here when you said grab the php, read me and language files and overwrite the old files by uploading through FTP.

So with that said, are you saying that I need the language file directory in the FB OGP plugin directory in addition to the PHP pluf file and the readme?

    (@ryno267)

was out of town for big hackathon.

what i mean is take these:

    wp-facebook-ogp.php
    readme.txt
    /languages/

and upload/copy/overwrite those new files with the old ones in your /plugins/wp-facebook-open-graph-protocol/ directory
