Choosing replacement for abandoned theme

  • Hello,
    I’m currently running my site using the Libretto theme, which hasn’t been updated in a couple of years. I’m becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the situation so am thinking I had better switch to a different theme… one that is likely to be maintained for a number of years. This isn’t so much a question about Libretto (which is why I’m not posting the question to the theme’s forum) as a more general question — any guidelines for choosing a theme that will be unlikely to need replacement for quite a while? Am I best off going with one of the Automattic default themes (2022, 2021, 2020, etc.)? Is there something else I should be considering?

    The “default” WordPress themes (Twenty Twenty-Two and so on) will likely be supported for a very long time.

    Now might be a good time to consider switching to a block theme (like Twenty Twenty-Two) so that you can make use of the new Full Site Editing functionality that landed in WordPress 5.9. This gives you much more control and flexibility over how your site looks.

    Thanks @jameskoster. Any thoughts as to the longevity of themes like Seedlet (Blocks) and Blockbase? The Blockbase site seems to indicate it’s transitional… which sounds great for someone like me unless it’s going to be dropped more quickly than not.

    It is important to recognise that universal themes are a temporary measure. As the Site Editor continues to improve and more features are added, the need for universal themes will diminish. These wrappers will be made obsolete and in time universal themes will become block themes.

    Of course, one might say that as the Site Editor does continue to improve it might not be that much of a pain to convert from a universal to a block theme.

    Any thoughts from you or anyone else reading would be most welcome.

    I think that for all intents and purposes Blockbase themes (and other “universal themes”) are block themes. They just provide access to the Customizer as well. So it’s basically a question of whether you still want to use that, or if you feel ready to dive in to the Site Editor 100%.

    It’s impossible to say for certain, but since these themes are Automattic projects they will probably be around for a long time to come ??
