Choosing an appropriate theme.

  • I am having a terrible time starting up with wordpress. I have used dreamweaver for years but as I am in need of a site with a content management system.I was refered by a collegue, to wordpress.

    I am looking to create a site, similar in function, to craigslist. Meaning, I need to update information in catagories several times per day. (Blog function working well in this manner). That being said, I want to be able to place a variety of different pictures along the 2 outside columns in a 3 column theme and be able to manage the content in the center column. ( do not need any sort of commerce or payment options, I’m not selling anything.)

    I have literally spent 4+ hours today simply trying to find a way to prevent any discussion on the theme I chose and to disable any sort of comments.

    I could really use a theme suggestion and some tips for getting rid of comments. All of the googled old support questions give me instructions that have become invalid with the newest version of word press.

  • The method to disable comments in WP has always been like this for years.

    1. Not allow comments at all, globally.
    2. Individual post/page setting, this will override the first.
    3. CSS to display none to No Comment text, or Comment Number text if that post/page already have some comments in it.

    The first 2 are checkboxes. The 3rd one is to do in stylesheet. And if decide to not ever have anything to do with comments at all, just display none the entire comment div.

    Those first two options simply don’t work for me. I have unchecked every single box in connection with comments on every page and in the customization areas for discussion and it does not remove the comments sections.

    Your number 3 I don’t understand. I just started using wp this morning, so I do not know my way around it yet. I chose Raindrop theme because I like the dark color scheme and I created a custom header with my logo that fits perfectly, but I am having trouble with the other aspects of it. I was specifically told by another web designer not to edit the theme code because I would break the site, is this accurate?

    I am wondering if I chose the wrong theme to begin with.

    It depends which part and why and how. In general, when there is a need to make changes to theme, create a child theme and do it from there.
