Choose Crop for Thumbnails

I really like this plugin but there is one problem I hope can be solved.

The thumbnail images are cropped versions of the full images. For some images, this works. For others, for example a portrait of a person, this means that the the head is cut off in the thumbnail.

How can I swap the thumbnail image with a crop of my choosing? For example, could I upload a 120×120 image for the thumbnail rather than rely on the automatic crop?

If this is not possible, could I adjust the thumbnail crop for individual images using css properties, for example, vertical-align, etc.
