Choice of Theme

As a total newbie to web design I am completely befuddled by the amount of Themes available as none seem to fit what I had in mind. Can someone point me in the right direction. I worked in IT for 25 years but its at least 15 years since I did any coding which is why I chose WordPress to develop my site. Someone has suggested Twenty Ten will meet my needs but I don’t want to fail at the first hurdle. I am after something simple with space at the top for corporate logo and facebook/twitter/linkedin icons (are these widgets). Underneath on each page I want a banner photo that relates to the page content. And on each page I just want one column wide. I will also need a contact page with provision to make enquiries. Sorry if this is basic stuff but I need somewhere to start.
