CHMOD – “If this file were writable…”

    I had wordpress installed on a home server I use to work on. I intstalled it on my site and uploaded all my themes. I can select different themes but when I go to update anything I get a message:
    <i>If this file were writable you could amke changes</i>
    I CHMODed all directories and still nothing.
