Chinese script — can’t get it to work

followed the instructions here

however can’t get my PDFs to output text in Chinese… all characters come out as squares.

– changed body font-family in options under custom css but with no results
– copied both noto-sans and wqy-zenhei to the content/fonts folder
– changed the code in functions.php to either one of the fonts

some details: my website is in English but it has a lot of content in Chinese — it’s a documentation repository, so the page lang tag is english.

Any workaround would be great to know, for example using a default non-serif system font, is that possible?
