• Can anyone help??

I have edited my wpconfig file twice to attempt to resolve this problem.

    1. From “Chinese characters turn into question marks” thread — I commented out the utf8 language. This did not work & in fact made other special characters into garbage.

    2. Added the Chinese language localization (the .mo and .po files) and then edited wpconfig to make WPLANG = zh_CN. This localized my entire site into Chinese, not at all what I want.

I have WP 2.5.1 added by Fantastico on a Bluehost site. I opened phpMyAdmin (another suggestion) and noticed that my posts use the latin1_swedish.ci collation. So that appears to be the problem — how do I fix it?? Is it possible to go into wpconfig and redefine collation as utf8_general.ci?? Or is another action required??

    Thanks!

  • Just one step at a time…

Is this a new blog or is it an upgrade? When did it start NOT to display the characters correctly?

Thanks for the reply. It’s your comments I saw in one of the previous threads, so thanks for trying again here.

New blog, never has displayed properly.

It’s a recent install via Fantastico.

My comments always were: delete or comment out 2 [two] lines from wp-config if there is a conflict with the DB’s collation/encoding and the WP’s encoding.

Never installed anything via Fantastico – on all my manual installation all the languages are functional.

If I delete (comment) out the 2 lines from wp-config, what would be a default encoding?

Also, it occurs to me that this change might only work prospectively. I am going to go make the change right now and put a new post up and see what happens.

You define the encoding in 2 ways: either from your admin panel: admin > Settings > Reading… or in the wp-config.php file. The latter overwrites your settings.
So, don’t worry, it will be fine, if you delete/comment out those 2 lines.

And yes, probably, it will work for posts/Pages that you write from now on.

    Got it! Thanks . . .

New posts are OK. I have only a few affected old posts (I am designing the site as we speak and didn’t want a lot of clutter in the alpha stage) so I will just take them down.

And of course I’ll have to refresh this if I upgrade via Fantastico. Sigh.

    Many, many thanks!

Don’t upgrade with F. The manual upgrade is really easy and you are in control!
