Child theme of Twenty Seventeen or Completely new theme

    Good Afternoon,
    I am a supporter of using the WordPress Default Twenty Seventeen Theme and then creating a child theme with our changes, however, the people I have contracted says that this might be a mistake.
    All I really want to do initially is to add an option (checkbox) under the Header Media that allows a user to set the option that the Header image to only display the height of the image selected.
    In other words, if the image height is only 75px, then it should only be 75px and not the whole page.
    Makes sense?

    So basically, is this possible with a child theme of Twenty Seventeen or should I have a completely new theme created?

  • @a31 – Is this for a personal project or to submit to the wp org theme repository? If you are happy with using Twenty Seventeen and a child theme why would they recommend a new theme? What you are trying to do is possible using a child theme

    This is for a business site, but no theme does not have to be on repository.
    They say new theme because Twenty Seventeen apparently can not do this.

    Do you perhaps have some link of sorts for me where I can learn how to do this with Twenty Seventeen?

    @a31 – sorry I have been away. Did you manage to figure it out?

    No, I didn’t. The first page of my blog ‘HOME’ was to have the video header, so I installed it. Since it didn’t play sound, I removed EVERYTHING that could possibly tie a video to that page. Video still plays and none of my site works. Posts NEVER go where I direct them (to the various categories I’ve made), even though the customize menu is the same as appearance>menu and pages/categories match. Another theme?

    wow, sorry I spoke. I was just kindly informing you as this thread was started by A31 not you.

    @salsaturation – Yes thank you.
    What I have eventually done is to find a maintained theme that more or less suits our needs, then created a child theme with a few minor adjustments on it to accommodate our needs.

    It would have been nice to have a theme completely dedicated to us, but it really does not warrants the cost when a child theme accomplishes the same goal.
