child theme not appearing on WP theme page

how do you make a child theme a zip file?

ok..to be clear… I need to upload a zip file version of child theme from now on. If so, first time I have heard that but good to know.

No, you can upload a regular folder via FTP. If you want to use the Dashboard uploader, it has to be zipped.

However, it’s not clear to me that your FTP is working – so zipped may be a better option.

I tried a few things. I tried a new theme, created a style.css file, made it a zip file, and tried to upload it and got this messege:

“Installing the theme…

Destination folder already exists. /hermes/bosoraweb137/b1777/ipw.nickschelincom/public_html/NShere/wordpress341/wp-content/themes/style.css/

Theme install failed.”
This file shows up on the media library

The child theme has to be a FOLDER – inside that folder is where you put the style.css file. Look at your themes folder (via FTP) – see how those are all folders? Each theme (including any child themes) is a folder – with a bunch of files (and other folders) inside that.

ok…but when i try to upload the folder it isn’t active to select, I only have the style.css.zip file to choose. what am I doing/setting up wrong?

The FOLDER has to be ZIPPED – and the name on the zip MUST be the name of your child theme – so something like:

xx-child.zip
    xx-child (this is a FOLDER)
        style.css (this is the child theme style.css file)

I also just notice at the bottom of the wordpress themes page it shows this message.

“Broken themes – The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.”

WPyogi – Sorry, but I dont understand. the way you have it written…I cant put a folder inside a zip file.

ok.. so im trying to understand… your saying you can put a folder inside a child.zip file. I did google it and nothing refers to that, more about how to create a zip file which I already did.

I traced back that upload error message back to finding out somehow there is 2 wp-config files created back when I was first setting up wordpress. could this be the root of my problem?
