Hi my fellow developers, This might be a kind of foolish question but I want to ask this from technical perspective.

When creating a child theme is it necessary to have its parent theme existed on wp-content/themes?

For example I am making a child theme of Twenty Eleven which is not coming as pre-installed on WordPress version 4.0 and beyond, so I have to install the Twenty Eleven theme on theme directory or I can make child without installing it as I am already referencing it on my CSS as /* template: twentyeleven */

    Thanks.
