checkbox not working on registration form

Hello, thanks for your awesome plugin! But unfortunately it’s not working for a website I am working on. My theme doesn’t support the default ‘add checkbox’ method, so I put the following code to the registration form manually:
<label><input type="checkbox" name="mc4wp-try-subscribe" value="1" checked /> Sign up for our newsletter!</label>You can see the specific form on https://bonaire.websitedelivery.nl/register/
In your FAQ you mention that everything has to go automatically once you add the code, but it doesn’t work for me (yet). Once I register a new user, I receive a message of a new user, but I don’t see the subscriber added to my mailchimp list.
I am dying for a quick answer, since I spent my whole afternoon try fixing this problem. Thanks in advance!
