check if comments were ever open for entry

I would like to add a check for whether or not commenting was ever open for an entry or not. Basically, I only want “comments are closed” to appear with articles that at one time had commenting open but have since then been closed. I’ve been digging through the codex but so far I’ve not figured anything out.
