check for correct file type on clicking next page

Is it possible to check that the file type for a file upload field is correct, not only when trying to submit the form, but also when trying to proceed to next page?
In my form this happens: User choses a file with incorrect file format and proceeds. Later he tries to submit. Nothing happens.
Not even a hint where his error might be. Maybe the tab of the page with the incorrect file upload should be highlighted or something. But that would be the second solution. The first one is: Can the form check for correct file type when clicking next page?
