I’m getting the “Cheatin’, uh?” message when I try to customize my theme. If I click either Customize or Header in the Appearance menu, I briefly see the edit screen and then it switches to the “Cheatin’ uh?” screen.

I’m on WP 4.2.2 and the current version of the Twenty Thirteen theme. I’ve deactivated all plugins, with no effect. I’ve tried Twenty Eleven, and it has the same error. I reinstalled WordPress. Twenty Eleven wasn’t installed before, so that was a fresh download before I tried that.

The wp-content directory is NOT in the default location. I have:
    /root
    -/wp <– contains WordPress files
    -/wp-content
    -index.php

Everything else seems to work fine. I’ve set up other sites with that configuration, but I can’t say I’ve ever tried a theme’s built-in Customize screen.

It appears this is somewhere within WordPress or the standard themes. Any idea how to fix?

NOTE: If nothing else, can somebody clue me in as to what process triggers that message? I’m going to do some source spelunking, but a starting point might be nice. Thanks.

Okay, found the problem — or at least narrowed it down.

I have an unusual setup in one aspect — I run multiple sites off of a single codebase that is symlinked to multiple sites. That is, the “wp” folder in the above-described setup is actually a symlink.

Works great in all other ways that I’ve observed, but triggers the “cheating” message for some reason. If I can figure out a fix I may submit to trac as a bugfix.
