Characters messed up by 2.2

I just upgraded to 2.2, and it seems to have messed up all the International Phonetic Alphabet characters I had used (which should’ve been in Unicode, at any rate, based on the means I used to get them there [cutting and pasting from other sources]). Is there a problem with unicode recognition in this version? I’m also using the artsemerging theme designed for 2.0 (https://saartsemerging.org/artsemerging-wordpress-theme/), but I don’t see how that could be causing trouble in this case (since the fonts always worked *before* the upgrade).
