• Hi – I was wondering if someone could offer a little advice regarding a character problem – I have trawled through the forums for hours now and my brain has turned to jelly! ??

The problem is this: I’m pulling the titles of some posts from my blog onto another site – all is well except for this character: ‘ it comes out like this: ? instead. The thing is, I’m not coping and pasting from a non UTF-8 editor – just typing it in – I’m using the html editor too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks ??

  • Now, is it “pulling” from another site or is it typing?

Hi Moshu – I am typing the titles, not “pulling” from another site. I am pulling the titles of some of my selected posts from my WP blog onto another non WP site of mine using an rss aggregator – I’m pulling news headlines too there, but headlines from my blog are the only ones with the problem.

Bump – Any ideas? Anyone – Could use a little help please if poss ??

By the title, I expected this post to concern keeping stolen money or having a crush on your neighbor’s wife or something! :o)

Does the site you are posting to use the same character encoding as your WP site? From the content of your post I assume you are using UTF-8 in WP; is the second site something like ISO 8859-1?

Hi Jon… thanks for the smile regarding the post title ?? As to your question the 2nd site is UTF-8 too – other third party headlines I’m pulling are showing fine, just the headlines pulled from my blog are squify :/ when it comes to ‘ which comes up as ?

Any suggestions wuld greatly appreciated ??

The titles themselves aren’t being pulled from WP via RSS, right? The reason I ask is because WP replaces a “prime” ( ‘ ) with ’ ( ’ ), an apostrophe. Sometimes my site shows up with either a “?” or simply nothing in place of the apostrophe when viewed with certain user agents such as the ones on most PDA’s and phones. There’s a plugin called Unfancy Quotes that changes the apostrophe back to the “prime” character. However, if you aren’t aggregating the title to the other site, that would have no effect. Try typing ’ where you want the apostrophe to appear, since you’re typing the title, anyway. The problem may not be with WP, but with the software used on the other site, or your HTML editor.

Hi Jon – thanks for that, I’ll give the plugin a bash.

The post headlines are being pulled from my blog onto my other site using Carp – I have tried using code̵code but when I do this I get a parse error on the site displaying my blog headlines. All other 3rd party headlines display as they should.

I’m just wondering if my new keyboard is causing the problem – I bought a new one – which is German (I live in Switzerland) although I have it set up correctly on this Windows XP machine.

OK… I was trying to reproduce the symbols for this ( ‘ ) but messed it up… somehow ??

According to this source, I was wrong in calling this: ( ‘ ) a “prime;” it’s a “neutral apostrophe.” As stated in comment 12 on that article, ’ and ” are “prime” and “double prime,” respectively. Anyway.

    Glad you got it working.

Not quite there yet Jon – but I will try the plugin you suggested – many thanks though for taking the time to help out – much obliged to you sir.

    Best,

Try a test post with an escaped neutral apostrophe: ' outputs: '. See if that helps.
