Changing WP permalink format created several 404 for my posts

To test what’s wrong, disable all your other plugins and switch to the default WordPress theme.
If the problem does not persists, figure out which plugin is the cause of the problem and mentioning both plugins in this topic.

That’s exactly what I did, hence this topic here on the Polylang board. The issue was with the Polylang plugin, for some reason the old links generated by Polylang are not redirecting to the new ones.

Could you give an example: which old URL and which new URL?

Could you give a link to see what you get and say what you expect.

Sure, for the primary language (without the language code):

Old URL: https://www.lookleft.eu/blogging-pt/truques-e-dicas/2676/5-lugares-em-portugal-visitar/
New URL: https://www.lookleft.eu/5-lugares-em-portugal-visitar/

Another example, for the secondary language (with the language code):

Old URL: https://www.lookleft.eu/en/regions/1273/peru-day-9-lake-titicaca/
New URL: https://www.lookleft.eu/en/peru-day-9-lake-titicaca/

I changed the URLs format to be shorter and without the post IDs and categories. This will take a while for google to re-index the new URLs, and instead of having several 301, I have several 404…

The behavior that you get is normal because Polylang is not a redirection plugin.

Polylang can’t understand that you removed “post IDs and categories.”

You must use a redirection plugin to do that like Redirection.
