Changing Username

We have email address as our usernames in UM/WP. We’d like to allow users to change their username whenever they have a change in email address. Is there a way we can allow username changes either in UM or via a WP API? I’m comfortable in the api and UM hooks, but I’m not sure what the correct method would be to do this.
