Changing URLs to SEO Friendly Permalinks

  • Is there any downside to converting an established site from the standard URL naming convention mysite.com/?p=64 to mysite.com/seoed-page-url-name/

    Should one 301 redirect all the old URlS? Is there a plug-in created to accomplish this already?

  • The default “ugly” permalinks always work – no matter what kind of human-readable “nice” permalink you set up. The nice permalinks are more human-friendly than seo friendly, at least according to some wise people around here.

    I beg to differ. Having keywords in your url is huge for SEO.

    My question was from a technical standpoint, if you change links will both the /?p=64 work as well as the new permalink?

    You are going to take an initial hit from google, but WordPress (after 2.1?) should automatically redirect the old urls to the new ones.

    You can actually append ?p=xxx to any WordPress website and jump to the “real” url to that post.

    You could, and yes there is a plugin. Actually there are a few others, but I can’t seem to find them. I know Matt had one he made, too.

    EDIT: Found it! And Matt’s, too, but looks like that’s just for no-www.
