• Twenty Twenty has served me well but there are a couple of things I’d like to change, so I thought it’s about time to check out Twenty Twenty-one.

I have no idea what will happen when I change themes though. I haven’t done it before. Now though I’ve got 50 posts and pages and 20 plug-ins so I’m worried about causing a disaster that takes a week to repair.

If I decide to change back, will all my settings still work just like before, or do I have to back everything up and then restore them myself? NB I know about the danger of putting code in theme files – the only piece of code I have added is the new GA4 code, so I’ll be OK with that.

Take the change to Twenty Twenty-one: will I need to configure everything in the Customizer, like the menus for example?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi, Adam, here is an explanation page that should explain what happens when you switch themes: https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/what-happens-when-you-switch-your-wordpress-theme/

The changes in the customizer interface be saved when you switch it back, but it’s always a good idea to do a backup just in case.

It’s also a good idea to preview the theme before switching it.

I did a test run with switching between 2020 and 2021, and I did not lose any menus when switching the themes.

Other aspects of the customizer interface will have to be configured, though.

Oh no! I do want to try 2021, but not just 2021 – I want to obtain some specific functionality and not lose anything I haven’t made a note of (I haven’t documented anything to do with layout and design). However it’s not that super-important.

It looks like I will need to go the whole hog at some stage, because I’m pretty sure I will outgrow 2020 at some point. But I’ll need a staging server to try out the different themes and then tweak the new one until it’s ready to go live.

I guess I was being a bit naive.

    Thanks for the info.
