Changing the URL without changing the file location

  • I’ve looked around for an answer to this but while there are plenty of topics and docs on moving WP, they don’t seem to cover what I need to do, which is simpler than most. Most docs assume the files are moving, and/or that the URLs are moving from root to subdomain. In my case I want to change the URLs from subdomain to root domain and I don’t want to move the files from their current subdirectory. I’m running the Thesis metatheme that might perhaps have some special considerations.

    I installed WordPress in a subdirectory (../web) and set it up so that it could be accessed via https://web.mydomain.com

    I now want to change it so that it is accessed via https://mydomain.com – obviously I can look after the DNS requirements.

    Is there a simple way of achieving this? Which of the many “moving WordPress” documents apply, and which part of them?

    Thanks for the pointer: but this starts from the position of having installed WP in the root directory and indicates how to move it to a subdirectory.

    I suppose I could infer how you could go about the opposite, but I am not certain what would apply and what wouldn’t. It’s a sizeable blog and I can’t afford to screw up.

    My installation is already in a subdirectory, and the site is accessed via a subdomain that points at that directory. I want to leave the files where they are, but change the installation so that it works when the root URL points at it.

    Unless I am mistaken, this differs in several key respects from the article you suggest, but thanks for pointing me at it all the same!

    You aren’t doing the opposite, it’s just that you’ve already done some of the steps.

    Using a pre-existing subdirectory install

    I’m not sure why you think this doesn’t apply to your case.

    Yes, this worked brilliantly! Thanks for persevering with me!

    The only issue I have currently is that images in posts are not displaying. Going into Edit on the entry and then simply clicking Update (no changes made to content) fixes it on an individual post basis, but can anyone suggest a bulk method?

    Step 10

    Existing image/media links uploaded media will refer to the old folder and must be updated with the new location. You can do this with the Velvet Blues Update URLs plugin, or with a search and replace tool, or manually in your SQL database, by following the instructions at Tamba2’s Tutorial “Moving your weblog inside your PC”.
