• Given the number of brute force hacking attempts that use obvious usernames as they bang away at the back door, I want to change the admin username for my site (no, it’s not “admin” but still pretty obvious).

I’m assuming I can’t just change the admin username and that I need to add a new user with admin privileges. Then delete the old user.

Is there anything else I should be aware of before doing this? I’d had to lose access to my site because I forgot something obvious.

Nope. Just note that when you delete the original user, WP will ask you what you want to do with the content owned by that user. Be sure to click the option to transfer it to another one.

Also note that this won’t stop folks from rattling your doorknob.
