I want to change the domain of my website from example.org to example.com. At the moment under example.com there is live old version of my website, should I turn it off before pointing example.com to the new website, does it matter? Also should I leave example.org for some time until example.com is fully propagated? When is the best time to change the domain in WP settings? I followed the codex, but I couldnt find solution to this particular example.

  • I’m a bit confuse on what website is which domain. But if I understood correctly.

    1. should I turn it off before pointing example.com to the new website, does it matter?
It doesn’t matter. It is up to you, I would recommend leaving it there until you fully tested the new website with the domain example.com. In case something goes wrong, you can easily go back to the old website.

    2. should I leave example.org for some time until example.com is fully propagated?
I would say the same as the previous question.
When you are ready to use only the example.com domain, rember to configure 301 redirects for each page to the new domain.

    3. When is the best time to change the domain in WP settings? I followed the codex, but I couldnt find solution to this particular example.
I’m not entirely sure on this one. You should probably do it right before you point the domain to the right server.
But since, I’m assuming, you can access right now to the website using the domain: example.org. You should be able to do it last.
