• I am using the twenty eleven theme for my new site and i’ve got it all how i want it except for the content area.

Rather than posts i am using pages only. It is set up as content on the left with a right sidebar, but i’m not using a sidebar at all, it’s just set that way because setting it as no sidebar narrows the side drastically.

Anyway, the result is that the top, left and right margins are very big, so is there a way to widen the text area? Also, the text area is stark white, which is quite a contrast to the rest of the site and i’d like to have a very subtle colour as a background to all pages. Is there a way to do this simply?

To see what i’m talking about, the site is https://www.tranquillitypublishing.com/wordpress

    Thanks

  • It depends on a couple of things — one being whether you care if you have cruddy code. It’s considered important by any decent web coder, at least IMHO. See this https://www.w3schools.com/web/web_standards.asp

Also, browsers may not support or continue to support deprecated code — so at some point your site may “break” if you use it.

To fix it you need to remove all instances of old code and replace it with the current standard. Look at the validation errors — they show exactly what is wrong and where. It’s worth investing the time to do it right. Did you, by chance, just copy/paste code from another site? Or who coded the content?

Is it the theme’s fault though, or have i done something? All i’ve done is upload the header, change the menu colour (by changing the font colour in the css file), that’s it.

I haven’t copied any code, but the text content has been pasted from the site in my original post here. Is that the problem?

Definitely from whatever you pasted — did you paste html code? It may avoid copying the code if you just paste “plain text” into the visual editor.

No code, just plain text, although one page had images that haven’t pasted across
