• Hey,

I have a site that will go live next week. It will use the domain name of a site currently hosted on a different server.

However I built the site using parked domains since the final domain is currently live elsewhere.

    So:
Parked domain name which I am working under is https://www.parkedname.com

Therefore my WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) are currently both https://www.parkedname.com

I need to change both to finaldomainname.com.

Are there directions on how to best accomplish this?

    Thanks!

  • Simply point the domain name at the directory WP is installed in using cpanel or other host admin tool. Change the WP urls and clean up any bad links.

I think I will have a ton of bad links. But will do that.

Question – I can’t go ahead and do that now can I? I actually have to wait until the final domain points to the site correct?

Or can I do it now and try to still access the site through the parked domain?

I get confused by these things.

You mention a different server so you will have to change the A record for the domain to point it at the ip address of the “new” server. As soon as you do that, the old site won’t be reachable with the domain name. Within the new site hosting account, add the domain name and point it at the right directory and change the WP urls.
WP will update all the links except:
hard coded absolute links in your content
generated links that are serialized by some plug ins/themes. They are dependent on a url character count which the new domain name will probably change.
