Changing permalink to anything but default causes 404

  • As the title says really

    site running on iis6
    a couple of worpress sites installed on the same domain

    recently added plugins:
    wp-mail-smtp
    contact form 7

    and have just uninstalled them

    I used to have a redirect of /index.php/%postname%/
    changed it to /%postname/

    and it seems to have gone wrong from there
