I’ve got a strange problem that has arisen after changing the name of a parent page which was the name of a previous page that was deleted and completely removed from wp trash.

This page is now resulting in a 404 (not found) error along with one other page. Strange ?

I’ve defaulted back to the standard wp theme and stripped out all plugins and it does not resolve.

If I switch to default permalinks, everything is fine and all pages serve correctly.

I’m running nginx as a proxy only, so apache / wp is responsible for generating the cached version of the page in the first place, however it seems to not exist or never get generated ?

Also stripped back my htaccess to WP core and modified nginx conf files to no avail.

I ran a couple of SQL queries to check page ID and permalinks were correct and they looked OK.

Can anybody suggest what might be causing this ?

Pages – “Promotional” and “Services” are the problem pages.

Also checked error logs (nothing there) and file permissions after finding I had a permission problem with a folder I was unable to remove. I will repeat checks, now that permissions have been reset.

Aha! resolved. It was an nginx rule that broke it.
