• Hi, I’m not well versed with wordpress but have taken over the creative side of creating my firms website from the developer (adding sidebars, uploading the pictures, drafting the content, etc). I tried to change the theme and it crashed the site and my dashboard so I now cannot log in. I have researched the solution and have been told to change the name of the theme in the directory, however when I go to the ftp in internet explorer I am unable to rename or do anything to the files.

    I have the white screen of death.

    Please help!

  • Just guessing but it sounds like you can’t rename the folder due to your FTP accounts permissions. The quickest solution would be to get in touch with your hosts and ask them kindly if they can rename the folder for you.

    Thanks, I have emailed the website developer to ask him. Hopefully it’ll be fairly easy to sort.

    I don’t have to open the FTP in another programme? I just opened it in my browser.

    Thanks

    @sckls, that shouldn’t be an issue, if you’re using some software on your server to access it you don’t necessarily require a dedicated FTP application.

    Keep us posted if they don’t manage to resolve your issue.

    Thank you James.

    My site is up and running now – hurray!

    How can I prevent this problem occuring in the future? I still wish to change the theme but am scared that this will keep happening.

    Thanks

    @sckls great stuff.

    It’s a hard one to suggest a solution without knowing what caused the issue in the first place. The chances are it there was a theme / plugin compatibility issue which was causing this.

    If it’s possible, I’d suggest replicating your install into a dev folder such as yourwebsite.com/dev and then you can use this as a sandbox to test themes and plugins without impacting on your live website.
