• I am using the Twenty Eleven 1.2 theme, and I have activated the “Pages” widget by dragging it into the “Main Sidebar” in Dashboard. This allows me to display all my menu items along the left-hand-side sidebar. However, I want to change the way the menu items listed appear.

In particular, by default, the items appear in bold text. Instead, I want them to appear as normal text, and become bold only when I hover my mouse over any item. Also, when selected, I would like that particular menu item to appear bold and italicized. Finally, I also want to change the bullets used for these items to something else. Since this is my first time using WordPress and creating a website, I am totally lost. I know that I probably have to make some change to the ‘style.css’ file (which I’m accessing from: Dashboard -> Appearance -> Editor). However, I can’t figure out what to change or how to change it. Can anyone help?

  • Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. It is the default WordPress 3.2 theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues. Create a child theme for your changes. Once your child theme is active, we should be able to help with the customisation.

Thanks for the tip; I didn’t know you could do that. Up to now I’ve been saving the original .php files as text files to serve as back-up. Anyway, it’s done – a child theme of the twenty-eleven theme has been created. So back to the original problem, how can I change the layout of the menus as described in my previous post?
