Changing images header keeping the default ones

    I’m pretty new too word press, I installed the newest one and reading the documentation I succeeded to create a twentyeleven-child theme.
    So the directory now contain a style.css.
    My questions are simple but very confused explained elsewhere in the forum so forgive me if I ask it. I want to use the nice random option to show the pictures on the header but I’d like to use custom pictures and I want to store them in a way to prevent being erased from wp updates

    1) How I can upload custom pictures?
    2) Where do I have to store it and how?
    3) How many pictures can be uploaded to use this function?
    4) Can I upload them in my child theme directory to not erase the default ones?
    5) what is the best and smart way to do it?

  • You just need to upload your own pictures via ‘appearance/header’ in the administration panel. If you upload several pictures you’ll see that you can set the random option at uploaded images on the same page. Then save it.

    I don’t know whether there is a limit on the number of pictures. The default ones are not erased.

    The pictures are stored as uploads, you can access them via ‘media’. Try to use the suggested size 1000 x 288 px or let WordPress crop it for you during the upload.

    Thank you very much for the reply that help me a lot.

    I had understood it from other posts but my doubts were also if in case of updating WP the pictures could be erased. From your reply

    I suppose that updating the wp core doesn’t affect these pictures, is it true?

    You should use the manual update if you made chenges to the standard themes.
    Check this link for a more detailed explanation. Somewhere on this page it says:

    ‘If you have customized the TwentyTen or TwentyEleven theme, you should not use the automatic upgrade, as it will overwrite your changes – you should use a manual update instead.’

    When you update WordPress manually, you should backup the content of ‘wp-content’. This is the folder where your theme is (‘wp-content/themes’). If you paste this content back to ‘wp-content’ after installation of the new WP files, you’ll still have all your costomization.

    A drawback may be that you may miss possible updates to the theme. So you may prefer the automatic update of WP. Afterwards you can add your header images again, it is done fairly quickly. The changes that you made to the theme via a child theme won’t be influenced by the update.

    Thank you very much, I will keep this information in a safe place and anyhow I think it’s a wise idea to make a backup always before any update.

    Solved!!! I used the Appearance>Header and uploaded 6 custom pictures in the size required and it brought up a new random group options.
    They are stored in wp-content > upload so they are not affected by automatic update.
    I created a child theme of twenty eleven to be more sure not deleting in case of upgrading.

    One of the great things about using child themes (as you indicated you have done) is that you CAN use the automatic update feature, and it will not affect your changes, as the automatic update only updates the parent theme, and does not affect your child theme.
