changing image container per css from cover to contain

hi,
i tried to customize the css of full-width-slider-wp.css in my own custom theme css file and changed .o-slider–item’s background-size to contain. what worked in the browser inspector did not work with changing my theme css. can you please give me a hint how to achieve this?
