• Hi I am new to wordpress hosing service. I work on a website that is a .net domain name hosted by godaddy. I just transferred a .com domain name to godaddy from comcast business which is what my boss wants to use for the wordpress site from now on. What is the best way to go about switching the wordpress domain from .net to .com? Does it matter that the .com was transferred to godaddy from a different provider? Is it as simple as just changing the WordPress Address (URL) and Site Addresss (URL)? Or do I need to do domain mapping etc…

  • I’m not sure if my answer is going to be helpful or not but i have just changed my domain.

what i ahd to do is make the new domain a primary domain in godaddy as my site is hosted in the root, once all that was done i had to go into wordpress admin panel then settings > General
then change the wordpress address (URL) and site address (URL) to the new domain and i was done.

    hope this helps you

thanks so much for responding! I will try that ??

This approach will work on simple sites which do not have URLs and paths stored in ‘serialized’ strings in the database, but can give many different problems where they are stored like that.

When you move a site, you must replace the old URLs and paths with the new ones. Some of these may be stored in the database in ‘serialized’ form where the string length is stored along with the string. You must use special tools to search and replace the old values with the new ones.

If you replace an old URL with a new one of a different length, it will break the serialization, causing many different problems.

If the old site is still available, you can use the steps shown in this article to copy the site: https://wordpress.mcdspot.com/2012/08/22/migrating-a-wordpress-site-step-by-step/

If the old site is not available, and you still have a copy of the database from that site, you should be able to use this tool to make the changes: https://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/

Thank you so much vtxyzzy. I broke the old site because all the URLS got destroyed. I am going to have to do this now to copy the site.
