Changing directories…again

  • new to blogging. Trying to change it so the home page is site.com rather than site.com/wordpress.

    I’m reading the instructions for “Giving WordPress It’s Own Directory” but I’m stuck on step 6. “Move your WordPress core files to the new location. (wordpress address)”.

    These files are already in site.com/wordpress

    Which files are “core files” and where do I find them? Do I need to I really need to move them since they are already in a WordPress directory?

    Then step 7, “Copy (NOT MOVE) the index.php and .htacces files from the WordPress directory to the root directory” (What should the root directory look like in the File Manger? site.com? Because I don’t see it or anything that references the name of my site in the file manager.)

    Please Help a Newbee

    This helped me get through the instruction but some how my blog site is all muffed up.

    I haven’t done much, so I saved what I’ve done so far on a Word doc to start over.

    I removed WordPress.

    I tried to install it in the root directory but it’s telling me there can only be 1 scripting file in the root.

    Basically, I simply want the address for my sit to be https://site.com rather than https://site.com/worpress.

    What you recommend to make this happen?

    What other scripts you have in root? And when you say that’s telling you that only one can be in root, you mean from your hosting i.e. cPanel > Fantastico?

    I see fantversion.php in by cpanex Fantastico.

    Would that be what the error message is referring to?

    This is easy fix. If you’re doing this for the first time and if you don’t have anything in your WordPress i.e. posts and such, go ahead and delete all files that you moved earlier, delete your WordPress installation from Fantastico and make a new one, this time don’t choose /wordpress as the installation directory, leave the field blank and it will be installed in root (example.com).

    By doing this you will save yourself much time and you’ll know that all is installed properly.

    Also, just an FYI that few of the hosting providers didn’t upgrade their “Fantastico” WordPress platforms.

    This for an example in fantversion.php is the version of WordPress installation via Fantastico. Once you’re done with your installation and prior to anything else as far as plugins, different themes etc, do an upgrade to the latest 3.0.4 version of WordPress.

    Some hosting companies are slow to make their updates, even though the latest release was mandatory security update. This was just for your very own knowledge and all others who will read this.

    Yes, that’s what I was trying to install (into the root) but what script are they talking about…

    “The installation can not be completed:

    – You cannot install more than one script in the root directory of a domain.

    Click on the browser’s Back button to fix reported errors.”

    How do I post a screen capture here? I don’t see anything that looks like a script.

    You can upload images with https://imgur.com/ and I will take a look. Go in Fantastico and check all scripts on your left, once you click on one of them you’ll see if the script was already installed. If so just uninstall what you don’t need.

    It will look something like this:

    Current installations:

    example/blog (3.0.4) Visit site Remove

    This example is WordPress, other script will be slightly different.
