My blog has been unavailable since yesterday and my hosting company are telling me that the mysql server it is on is under a heavy load. and pointing me to a form where I can request a change of database server.

I’ve been looking through the codex and through the support forums, but can’t find any doco on changing just the actual database server.

Is this just a matter of changing the server details in the wp-config.php file?

    Thanks in advance!

    Thomas

Well, it depends who is doing the move itself.
If they (=the host) are going to move the DB to another server, backing it up and taking the responsibility for that – then the only thing you have to do is to change the BD host name in the config file.
However, I wouldn’t trust 100% anybody else, so I’d make a backup for myself before they start messing around. Hosts tend to… ??
If they will give you space on another DB server and you have to move over the content of your DB tables — follow:
Moving_WordPress and pay attention to the links going to Making a Backup and Restore DB.

    Thanks Moshu!

I think they would take the responsibility for transferring the database. But i’d be the same as you, i wouldn’t trust them 100% either! I’ll make backups before anything happens.

    Thanks again for the info,

    Thomas
