Changing categories created duplicate title issues in Google search

  • Without thinking too much about the consequences I changed the category structure for easier navigation which in turn means different url’s for each blog.
    e.g.

    – red
    – blue
    – white

    is now
    – colours – red
    – colours – blue
    – colours – white

    As a result Google search is now raising duplicate title warnings with the same blog post being listed on the old and new url syntax plus also a trackback url

    I though this would naturally disappear over time as Google realised the original url structure no longer doesn’t seem to be the case.
    I have turned off the trackback/ping feature within WordPress.

    Its now been a month and the duplicate titles are still showing on the Google webmaster tools so I’m beginning to think I need to do something mpro-active myself. But what?

  • You have to delete the older url’s for the categories . If you have redirected them to new one then you have to use redirection plugin . Thirdly you can delete all categories create fresh categories with any name , you can use above names also . This would remove all redirections .

    Thanks – sorry I must be missing something really basic here.

    All I have done is created a new category colours and moved the existing category red to be a separate subdirectory.
    So an existing post “a” that did have a url
    /red/a
    is now reference url
    /colours/red/a

    As far as I can see /red/a no longer exists so how can I delete it. ?

    Or have I missed the whole point and should be downloading a plugin which in essence says any reference to urls beginning /red sre really /colours/red.
    I’m confused
