• I am now redoing my site using WP.
I assume that it will take me a few weeks to redo my site and I obviously don’t want it to be down during this period.
If I use another domain that I have will it be a problem to move over to the “real” domain when I have finished the site?
Is this the best way to go about it?
    Thanks in advance.

  • What is it that you want to move?

Does it mean you want to run your blog using another instance of WordPress in a different domain and import the contents of it to the main domain once it is set up with WordPress?

You can do it easily, but you’d lose the back links and search engine rankings which are domain-name-specific.

Depends on what you want to achieve.

    Thanks for your reply.
I have a static site that I want to rebuild using WP.
I am going to redo the whole site. I will try to get the URL’s to be the same with a plugin (if possible). If not, then I will do 301s from every old address to the new one.
I am not sure where to save the site until it is ready. It has over 400 pages so it will take time to move it over.

    WordPress has a solution.

You can install WP in a sub-domian. Let the old site remain as it is drawing visitors. Build the WordPress back end in the subdomain. Then use the technique enumerated in the codex page “WordPress in its own directory”.
